Uncommon Ground, what a name for a place that holds readings and folk singers in its tiny alcove corner heart; it is of course a coffee shop and as such I suppose “uncommon” is being used as a differentiator.
Their grounds are no squelch, popper, or common beans – rather, they serve rarefied coffee. Still, standing outside, my popped tire bicycle racked up, the sign reading “Uncommon Ground” strikes me funny enough to use as a first line here.

Janna Sobel, God, I love the way you write. She was graced with a headlining slot along with Dennis Frymire at Story Club. I am not the only Janna follower. When I arrived, she was already flanked by the luscious Brandie Madrid and her paramour, Matt. Here is the postcard I brought with me.

Hillel gifted us with this idea of creating a space within a space after he started busting out moves at a club. The audience told him, “You’re a really good dancer!” But rather than rock out to the dance club grooves he didn’t care for, he had popped in his earbuds. The club was just …

Seems like new creative projects are springing up like wildflowers all over town! This season, Chicago people seem inventive and prolific; unafraid to dream new things up, smart enough to test them out within communities of resourceful friends, and willing to put in the work to make them happen.
I used to feel like there was a long distance between the dreams and ideas that lived inside me and the actual world; an almost unbridgeable gulf. I came to Chicago with a heart’s desire to learn to build such bridges, and I couldn’t have chosen a better place to learn. Friends and colleagues here remind me daily of the powerful combination of want and will and wiles, and I am grateful. (I include a gracious tip of the hat, or curtsy… or something more gender neutral?… to my HtS collaborator Dan, for all he continues to teach and discover with me in this regard.)
Our next show features some awesome givers. People who are making and doing very cool things. Read on to learn more about them!

Good people! We have a delicious line-up of storytellers for your hungry ears at our show on October 7th. We choose features for the interesting lives they lead, their skill as performing artists, and the unique and valuable things they have to share. This month, we bring you five people who elegantly embody all these, and we can’t wait for you to meet them. Keep on coming to Here’s the Story, and keep on watching us prove that the funniest, wisest and most fascinating folks are just like you in lots of ways. Across disciplines, specialties, histories and heritages, we have a lot more in common than we think.

So this is another sad tale from the lost bag file. As time moves forward I realize more and more things that I’d had in the bag that weren’t backed up anywhere else. A cautionary tale to everyone. Don’t procrastinate. Write your articles in a timely fashion. Unfortunately due to my procrastination, I’m missing all of my photos and notes for this show, and for Words that kill. This show, is a particular bummer because I had some super cool shots.
Deanna and Scott are gracious hosts and good friends of Here’s the Story, so clearly, I’m always welcome, but I was specially invited to this show by Kim Morris. I first heard her tell at Story Club. She read a brutal piece about the loss of a friend and subsequently we’ve been running into each other at shows ever since. For instance, I saw her at the Tuesday Funk a while back. And I’ll be seeing her at our Journey to the End of the Night. If you’re interested in seeing her brand of story telling, you can check her out at Fringe Fest.
But these are the two kids I want to tell you about today:

In my continuing attempt to fill the mailbox of Elizabeth’s Crazy Little Thing I present to you, a postcard!
Ian Belknap, who just happens to be one of our featured readers for July 6th! hosts Write Club, a knock-em sock-em drag out fight between two Chicago literary heavyweights.
There is only one rule of fight club and it is thus:

Susan Messing – Messing With a Friend
On the 16th I got the chance to see Messing with a Friend. I brought along with me the lovely Lynda Joy and was fortunate enough to be seated next to three lovely strangers. One from far away, (but Chicago born!) and another, Marissa with a twitter account worth following, (
or at least we believe so, come on hit approve! Wohoo, New Friend!) and Brian Elles.
